BYD Seagull Gets Right-Hand Drive, But Aussie Plans Unclear

Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer BYD Seagull is preparing to introduce its smallest model to the United Kingdom market, marking the first time the compact EV will be available in right-hand drive configuration. However, despite this development, Australian consumers are unlikely to see the vehicle locally anytime soon.

UK Market Entry as Dolphin Surf

The mini EV, known as the Seagull in its home Chinese market, will be marketed as the Dolphin Surf when it launches in the UK later in 2025. The vehicle has already established a presence in international markets, selling as the Dolphin Mini in countries including Mexico and Brazil since early 2024.

UK automotive publication Autocar anticipates the Dolphin Surf could be priced below £20,000 (approximately A$40,913), positioning it competitively against local small EVs such as the Fiat Grande Panda and Citroen e-C3. However, it will still trail the market’s current most affordable EV, the Dacia Spring, which starts from £15,000 (A$30,676).BYD launches cheaper Seagull EV with $9,700 starting price tag

Australian Market Challenges

In Australia, BYD’s current entry-level offering, the Dolphin Essential, retails for $29,990 before on-road costs, making it the country’s most affordable electric vehicle. However, EVDirect managing director Luke Todd, who oversees BYD’s local distribution, has indicated the company will not pursue lower pricing tiers for the Australian market.

“I think the price of $29,990 is the sharpest the current technology and the current environment allows us to do,” Todd explained. While acknowledging he would welcome a product under $25,000, he emphasised the importance of maintaining five-star ANCAP safety ratings across all Australian BYD models.

Safety Compliance Concerns

The primary barrier preventing the Seagull’s Australian introduction stems from safety compliance issues. Under Australia’s Australian Design Rules (ADR), all vehicles must meet stringent safety standards before market entry.

“People ask ‘when is the Seagull coming?’, and the reality is it’s not built to be able to achieve the Australian five-star [safety] rating right now,” Todd stated. The Chinese-market Seagull previously lacked active safety technology and some variants even omitted front-side airbags.

Recent Safety Improvements

BYD has recently unveiled an updated Seagull Intelligent Driving Edition in China, incorporating comprehensive safety enhancements. The revised model features BYD’s latest God’s Eye C advanced driver assistance technology, including adaptive cruise control, autonomous emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, lane-keep assist, and rear cross-traffic assistance.

Technical Specifications and Market Positioning

The Seagull measures 3,780mm in length, 1,715mm in width, and 1,540mm in height, with a 2,500mm wheelbase. This makes it 185mm longer than a Kia Picanto while maintaining a 100mm longer wheelbase. The vehicle’s kerb weight ranges between 1,160kg and 1,240kg.

Powertrain Options

Two battery configurations are available:

  • 30.08kWh LFP battery: Supporting 30kW DC charging with 305km CLTC range
  • 38.88kWh LFP BYD Blade battery: Supporting 40kW DC charging with 405km CLTC range

Both variants utilise a 55kW/135Nm electric motor for propulsion.
